Catcher Tiers Update: August 2013

Once again, it’s time to take a look at the Catcher Tiers and see where everyone is at for the month of August. There’s been a little more movement this month than last, though not too much. Some movement has occurred within the tiers, but there are definitely some tier-jumpers with whom to take notice. Not to mention, as the season has progressed, so has this list. A number of names have been added, including those whose contributions to fantasy are minimal. So without further ado…

Trinidad Moruga Scorpion

Buster Posey

Yadier Molina

Joe Mauer

The big three remain the same here. A little slump for Posey in July and a little DL stint for Molina don’t have much impact in the grand scheme of things. These are still your top three catchers in the fantasy game.

Naga Viper Pepper

The second tier has everyone the same from last month, but with the addition of Lucroy who legitimately took his game to the next level in July. He’s hitting for both power and average and easily deserves a bump in tier this month. Yes, Rosario saw a loss of at-bats towards the tail-end of the first half but he went back to the lion’s share of work after the break and is still hitting for a decent average with a reasonable amount of pop.

Red Savina Habanero

All of the above were in this tier last month and I saw no reason to give any of them the boot. Wieters is hitting for solid power, Castro and AJP have a little bit of both power and average, and V-Mart has looked much better in these last two months. Perhaps the knee isn’t bothering him as much at the plate these days. I’m leaving Perez in this group despite the weak numbers and current concussion as I believe he’ll hit for a solid average the rest of the way and kick in a little bit of power as well.

Scotch Bonnet

Evan Gattis

It’s either/or here as these guys are either hitting for power or helping out with a decent average, but not both. Montero drops a tier as he struggles to get back to the player he once was while Gattis gets a bump up for the recent increase in playing time. He’s not hitting like he was in April, but at least the opportunity is there. And Ramos has started to see the bulk of playing time in Washington and is doing an excellent job hitting for average recently.

Piri Piri

We’re finally seeing a little bit of life from Avila and Mesoraco is finally the top dog in Cincinnati right now. Bets of all, he’s hitting for both power and average, but we’ll see what happens if/when Hanigan every makes it back. Ruiz gets the bump down for a complete lack of power.

Serrano

Navarro is seeing more time and hitting well, Hundley is the new number one in San Diego, Phegley is learning on the job as he goes and Iannetta and Conger are pretty close to an even split in playing time.

Jalapeno

Back-ups, a lack of opportunity, injuries and what not. If you’re using anyone from here in your starting lineup, youy’re either dealing with injuries or your league is crazy crazy deep.

Pimento

Jeff Mathis

No good can come from using any of these guys unless they suddenly turn their season completely around AND start seeing some added playing time.
