Bullpen Report: July 30, 2023

The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Kenley Jansen, BOS: 1 pitch on Saturday, back-to-back days. RosterResource

It’s been a low pitch count for Jansen in back-to-back days, but he threw 17 pitches on Wednesday and that may leave him unavailable on Sunday. If so, both setup men Chris Martin and Josh Winckowski should be available.

Yimi García, TOR: 11 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. RosterResource

With Jordan Romano going on the IL (back), Erik Swanson is the likeliest to appear in a save situation on Sunday.

Scott Barlow, KCR: 18 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. RosterResource

There’s a lot of “High Usage Alert” blue in the Royals pen today. They may have to dip into the middle-reliever pool of Jonathan Heasley, Dylan Coleman, Nick Wittgren and Austin Cox for help on Sunday.

David Bednar, PIT: 31 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. RosterResource

Colin Holderman and “Reliever on the Rise” Carmen Mlodzinski should be available on Sunday.

Camilo Doval, SFG: 25 pitches on Saturday. RosterResource

Call in the Rogers brothers. Both Tyler and Taylor Rogers should be available on Sunday.

Committee Clarity

Adam Ottavino & Brooks Raley 레일리, NYM | RosterResource

With David Robertson now the closer in Miami, Ottavino, and Raley will likely share save opportunities moving forward. Here’s a comparison between the two:

Mets Closer Comparison
Name W L SV IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 LOB% ERA xERA FIP xFIP
Brooks Raley 0 1 2 37.0 9.73 4.14 0.73 87.9% 2.43 3.39 4.04 4.83
Adam Ottavino 0 4 6 42.1 8.29 3.83 1.06 82.0% 3.40 3.46 4.75 4.52

Raley wins out all three Stuff+ aggregated metrics (Stuff+, Location+, Pitching+) due to a very good fastball and slider. It’s likely that they will be playing the matchups, so adding one versus the other to your fantasy team based on their 2023 performance may be a challenge. Regardless, look for both relievers to share opportunities in New York moving forward, unless one of them gets traded.

Kevin Ginkel, ARI | RosterResource

When I wrote my “Ottoneu Hot Right Now” report last week, I wrote about Ginkel’s apparent takeover of the closer role after a rough patch by Scott McGough. The Diamondbacks have five different relievers with saves recorded this season, which is not too out of the ordinary, but does tell us they are not particularly set on one official closer. The role in Arizona is now projected to be a committee with Ginkel in the top spot followed by Andrew Chafin and then McGough. Ginkel’s BB/9 and K/9 ratios are not stand out spectacular, but he hasn’t allowed an earned run or a walk in his last three appearances. That means he’s the hot hand in Arizona right now.

Heads Up: Past time to replace Pierce Johnson in Colorado.
