Bullpen Report: August 29, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

The 2021 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save.)

Notable Workloads

Adam Ottavino, BOS: 12 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

There’s been a shakeup in Boston recently (read more in the “Outlier Saves” section) that has left Matt Barnes listed as a setup man “On the Hot Seat”. However, Ottavino likely needing rest brings Barnes back into the candidate group for a save opportunity on Sunday if Ottavino needs rest.

Gregory Soto, DET: 13 pitches on Saturday, three of last four days. | RosterResource

Setup man José Cisnero is a likely candidate for a save opportunity if Soto needs rest on Sunday.

Alex Colomé, MIN: 13 pitches on Saturday, three of last four days. | RosterResource

Juan Minaya and Tyler Duffey are likely candidates to fill in for Colomé if he is unavailable on Sunday.

Ryan Pressly, HOU: 11 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

Kendall Graveman and Yimi García are likely candidates for save opportunities if Pressly is unavailable.

Edwin Díaz, NYM: 10 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

Jeurys Familia and Seth Lugo are likely to get a save chance if Díaz needs rest.

Outlier Saves

•Adam Ottavino, BOS | RosterResource

Ottavino recorded his 1oth save of the season on Saturday night. Matt Barnes was on “High Usage Alert” and likely was unavailable. Still, things are shifting in Boston as the Red Sox fight to stay in line for the Wild Card. In Alex Cora’s post-game conference, he mentioned that both Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock are likely “down for the next two days”, and that someone will need to step up. Furthermore, if you’re looking at our “Closer Depth Chart”, you will see Ottavino listed as the new closer in Boston. Yet, Ottavino is likely in need of rest and that leaves Matt Barnes as one of the rested relievers who could be in line for a save opportunity. Ottavino has done well in the setup man/fill-in for Barnes type of role this season, recording 19 holds and only four blown saves on his way to those 10 saves mentioned earlier. The next few days will be very interesting to see how the bullpen takes shape in Boston.

Committee Clarity

Sergio Romo, OAK | RosterResource

Things are shifting to a more fluid situation in Oakland as Bob Melvin looks to “fli[p] things around” and “give (Trivino) a couple lesser ones.” However, what the real manager does has a big impact on what fantasy managers do and the committee in Oakland now consists of Trivino, Jake Diekman, and Sergio Romo. That doesn’t mean that Trivino now seems dropable, but instead, Diekman and Romo now seem to have a little more value from a fantasy manager’s perspective and may be worth adding while this situation shakes out. More can be read here.
