Bullpen Report: April 17, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

• Liam Hendriks, CHW: 29 pitches on Saturday, four of last five days. | RosterResource

Surely Hendriks will take a day off on Sunday, right? He’s converted all of his last four appearances for saves and has only had one day of rest in the past five days. But, like last year, Hendriks seems to require fewer days off than any other reliever in the game. If he needs rest on Sunday, Aaron Bummer or Kendall Graveman are likely candidates to get a save opportunity.

Josh Staumont, KCR: 10 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

It was Staumont who converted the save chance in the ninth inning in Kansas City on Saturday. Co-closer Scott Barlow (19 pitches) came in to get the last out in the seventh and then pitched the full-frame in the eighth. While neither pitcher is too taxed, both have thrown in back-to-back games. If both need rest, Amir Garrett is the most likely reliever to fill in the closer role on Sunday.

Lou Trivino, OAK: 22 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Recording his second save of the season on Saturday, Trivino seems to have worked his way back into the closer role in Oakland. He walked one, but struck out three in the bottom of the ninth against the high-powered Blue Jays. It’s possible he could go again on Sunday if needed but if not, “Reliever on the Rise” Dany Jiménez may get an opportunity to show what he can do.

Joe Barlow, TEX: 23 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Greg Holland (15 pitches) is also on “High Usage Alert” after appearing on back-to-back days. Closer committee members Brett Martin or Matt Bush are candidates for a save opportunity should one come up on Sunday.

Kenley Jansen, ATL: 11 pitches on Saturday, back-t0-back days. | RosterResource

Next in line Will Smith (21 pitches on Saturday) may be unavailable as well on Sunday, likely leaving Tyler Matzek the man to step up for a save chance on Sunday if the opportunity presents itself.

David Bednar, PIT: 24 pitches on Saturday, back-t0-back days. | RosterResource

Co-closer Chris Stratton threw 28 pitches on Saturday and may also need a day of rest. That would most likely place Heath Hembree into a ninth-inning save opportunity if there is a need on Sunday.

Daniel Bard, COL: 10 pitches on Saturday, back-t0-back days. | RosterResource

Either Alex Colomé or Carlos Estévez are likely candidates to get the save opportunity on Sunday if Bard is unavailable.

Injury News

Ryan Pressly, HOU: IL10, Knee inflammation | Roster Resource

Houston officials report that Pressly’s injury isn’t likely to be long-term and that recovery will be day by day. Pressly has already recorded three saves this season but showed a loss of velocity in his first few appearances. Houston will likely shift to a closer by committee situation with Héctor Neris, Ryne Stanek, and Rafael Montero all members.

Outlier Saves

Clay Holmes, NYY | Roster Resource

Holmes came into the game to get the last out of the eighth inning when the Orioles had runners on first and second. He forced a groundball out on Austin Hays to stop any chance of a comeback. He returned to pitch the ninth inning, striking out one and forcing another two groundball outs on only nine pitches. Both Aroldis Chapman and Jonathan Loáisiga were likely in need of rest on Saturday night, and Holmes was given an opportunity in which he did well.

Daniel Hudson, LAD | Roster Resource

Hudson came in to get the last two outs in the top of the ninth after farmhand Mitch White was given the opportunity to put the game away in a non-close situation. Things started to go sideways for White after he walked the first batter and gave up two hits, allowing the Reds to score a run and thus creating a save situation for himself. He did not get the chance, however, as Hudson came in to close it out, getting the last two outs and securing the save.

Ryne Stanek. I know he has a back issue. Any more news?
