Brad Johnson: As long as you can stream, I’d go start by start rather than picking one guy

Brad Johnson: There will be days when Koehler, Foltynewicz, Reynaldo Lopez, etc. are all solid plays

JD15: I am in an 18 team league that has holds and saves as head to head categories. With so many teams, all of the closers and primary set up men are already taken. What is the best way for me to find holds still on the wire? Do I look for who has been getting the opportunities very recently (ex. sort by last 7 days) or better track record over the course of the year? Basically, what time frame should I evaluate relief pitchers and how long do I give a guy before I move on to the next?

Brad Johnson: Since all but the best holds guys top out around 20 over a full season, I just target the most talented guys regardless of role

Brad Johnson: now, since it’s the end of the year, you don’t have the luxury of grabbing a Grant Dayton and waiting for the Dodgers to use him as their 8th inning guy

Matt C: Dylan Cozens or Rhys Hoskins for a dynasty?

Brad Johnson: Both so hard to evaluate since they’re playing in Reading. It’s Coors on steroids for that league. Throws everything out of skew.

Brad Johnson: From what I can gather, Hoskins is a little more likely to fit in the majors. Cozens is said to have too many holes to play in the majors

Brad Johnson: hard to believe that with the power numbers they both have though…

Brad Johnson: Not sure he holds over Soria, but you don’t have to target only 8th inning guys for holds

Brad Johnson: Well we’ve seen a spike in strikeouts in recent games. I think he settles in around 17%

Brad Johnson: otherwise, yea it’s real-ish. He has 20 HR pop, good contact skills, and an aggressive approach

Brad Johnson: it’s possible the scouting reports will catch up to him

Brad Johnson: expose something that completely defeats him

Brad Johnson: Jimmy Paredes is an example that comes to mind. Super aggressive approach then teams seemed to figure out how to get it past him

another bad dynasty manager: Why do people keep recommending streaming against the Braves? Whether you choose since the All-Star break or the last 30 days, the Braves are middle of the pack in both wOBA and wRC+.

Brad Johnson: Because they have one talented hitter in their lineup and a bunch of scrubs. They are demonstrably the weakest lineup in baseball on pure talent, regardless of what the recent performance says

Brad Johnson: past performance is a flawed proxy for predicting future performance

Brad Johnson: of course, that’s how we do 95% of what we do here at FanGraphs, we model past performance in some way

Brad Johnson: but it’s important to understand the weaknesses in the approach

Brad Johnson: the tricky part with pitchers like this – Chapman, Papelbon (way back), Osuna, maybe Rosenthal – is that they need seasoning in the minors to stick as a starter

Brad Johnson: It’s hard to sell your fans that it’s a good idea to take an elite closer and move him into a role which requires most of a lost season in Triple-A

Brad Johnson: Plus Diaz is probably a midrotation starter at best

Brad Johnson: with teams changing their evaluation of reliever prices, it’s probably easier for a club to justify leaving a player like Diaz in the bullpen

Brad Johnson: depends what you’re maximizing. Porcello’s a good source of wins and ratios. Felix has good potential for run support too

Brad Johnson: but they may be better pitchers right now.

Josh: What type of value do you place on Kendrys Morales? His numbers are suppressed, but he seems to have run into some bad BABIP luck considering his exit velocity is elite and he’s still spraying the ball. Can you rank him, Saunders, and Alex Dickerson ROS?

Brad Johnson: I think I’d roll with Dickerson over Morales right now, but I’d take him over Saunders

Brad Johnson: I think he’s a fine core player in a sufficiently deep league

Brad Johnson: hopefully you had the flexibility to sit him through that early season slump

Bill: What do you think of Ryan Schimpf for next year in an OBP league. Certainly he won’t hit 40+ HR like his current pace, but is 20-25 reasonable. Even with a low BABIP currentlly, and .220’s BA he has been running an OBP of .340. Seems like a poor mans Odor without steals but a better OBP

Brad Johnson: I don’t think he plays if he’s pumping a 20 HR pace

Brad Johnson: we need more data on him, but from what’s available, he’s like a .190/.300/.480 hitter.

Brad Johnson: It’s a VERY weird profile, especially for such a small guy

Brad Johnson: so many whiffs and everything is in the air

Brad Johnson: he’s going to have matchups that really suit his swing – most of the time he’ll walk or bust

Alex : Is Trevor Story a 2nd round pick next year despite the influx of shortstop talent?

Brad Johnson: Yes. And he’ll still be a bargain

Moelicious: Does Saunders have anything left in the tank? He has been brutal since the ASB.

Brad Johnson: probably playing banged up is my guess

Brad Johnson: the Blue Jays outfield is so hurt that they just need bodies

Brad Johnson: if he’s less hurt than others…you leave him out there

Bill: How do you compare some of the young infield prospects (Rosario, Albies, Adames, and though he’s not a SS, Devers) in terms of how quickly they are likely to arrive in the majors, and who do you see as being better major leaguers, and fantasy prospects. How does that group compare to Moncada

Brad Johnson: Devers is the only one I look at as a big fantasy prospect

Brad Johnson: I think the others will likely be fine MLB players but with more of a core or support type line for fantasy

Brad Johnson: I don’t see Albies as a fantasy guy at all

Brad Johnson: Talk to me again in a year or two

Brad Johnson: it’s hard to evaluate guys when they’re way too young for their levels and struggle

Brad Johnson: Might be a better Freddy Galvis, might be Elvis Andrus

Brad Johnson: Moncada is lightyears ahead of them as a fantasy prospect

MikeD: Josh Bell, Nunez, and Piscotty OR Piscotty, Nunez, and M. Ozuna ROS? The one hangup is can keep Bell for next year.

Brad Johnson: Bell really complicates things because it all hinges on the Pirates deciding his defense is startable

Lot of guys would put up bad numbers against that run of SP. He had a good series against MIlwaukee right before that run so I’m hoping it’s just a blip and he gets back on track soon but I have to admit, I’m a little worried.
