Brad Johnson: For the present season, sure. But he’s going to be one of your top 20 keepers.

JD15: What would the best process be for turning my current keeper league, that for the first 5 years of existence has done snake drafts, into an auction draft?

Brad Johnson: This can be complicated. There are a few ways to go about it, and discussing them would entail a full article. My recommendation for the path of least resistance is to have a “final” snake season then start fresh with an auction. Remind me in the offseason and I’ll post a full article on some options.

JD15: My 18 team keeper league, where you can keep 12 players for 5 years has a franchise tag option, where you can apply a franchise tag to a player to extend the keep-ability for an extra 2 years, but once you use it you cannot tag anyone for 3 year. Would it be best to use it on Kershaw this year (round 1 of 22 keeper) or wait until next year for Arenado (round 10 (if current production holds) of 22)?

Brad Johnson: I wouldn’t use it on Kershaw.

Brad Johnson: As much as he’s a league winner, all pitchers eventually succumb to injury

JD15: Just gave up 5 years of Giolito and Luke Weaver to get 4 years of M. Fulmer. How’d I do considering I’m sitting in a playoff spot right now?

Brad Johnson: With news that Fulmer might be limited down the stretch, I probably prefer the pair. I don’t hate it though, either side could win long term and you should come out ahead this year.

Yankee Doodle: The Yankees seem to have a lot of options for their 2017 starting outfield. Which three guys do you anticipate being out there on opening day next season?

Brad Johnson: Ells, Judge, and Gardner is my first guess

JD15: Is Adam Warren a reliable RP again? And is he the 8th inning guy the rest of the season?

Brad Johnson: Ok JD, you’re cut off

Brad Johnson: I’m not sure re: Warren. Probably 7th inning

George is Curious: Can you name a few American League rookies that have yet to be called up, but still might make an impact this season?

Brad Johnson: Gurriel, Vogelbach, maybe Jharel Cotton or Raul Alcantera

Toki: How would you react to initiating the same trade twice(the trade timed out both times) and having it open for 10 days and no response from the person you are trying to trade with? You can also tell that the person received an email regarding each trade as hasn’t even modified their roster in 30 days. Is this something you would bring to the attention of the Commissioner of the league? And how should they handle this?

Brad Johnson: Ignoring your offer either means they think it’s terrible or they’re not there. If they also aren’t editing their lineup, then they’re probably not there.

Brad Johnson: Tell the commish if they need to be replaced.

Brad Johnson: I routinely ignore especially bad offers for the max just so the owner in question thinks I might be considering it

Josh: Are Justin Upton and Michael Saunders worth holding onto in 12 teamers, or would streaming those hitter spots be better at this point?

Brad Johnson: Might be better with a stream at this point

Brad Johnson: depends on the options

Please Help: I’m in an 11-team AL-only and it’s the slimmest of pickings off the wire in terms of SP. However, I’m desperate right now and need to choose two of the following: Shields, Duffey, Caminero, Sabathia and M. Perez. Can you find two in there that won’t make me regret adding them? Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Brad Johnson: Missing a lot of context so hard to say. I’d aim big like a top 10-30 hitter

Lefty: When Cam Bedrosian comes off the DL, does he step back into the closer role? Whether he comes back this year or next

Brad Johnson: Might depend on Street. If he’s back first and doesn’t blow games, Bedrosian will go to the eighth

Dungeon Master: I paid heavily to get Buxton in a dynasty league a few years ago, do I try to cash out while he has some semblance of his former prospect shine, or wait to see if he pans out ?

Brad Johnson: If people come asking, place a top overall prospect valuation on him

Brad Johnson: and if nobody will pay, then ride him into the ground

Brad Johnson: if you solicit offers, it devalues him

Guest: Context cause this is league specific. In my league we get 6 keepers for pretty big rosters, keepers are divided by tiers, you can get 1 tier 1, 2 tier 2’s and 3 tier 3 (tier’s are decided by draft position and set as long as you keep them) You can move guys up but not down. Right now I have Nolan Arenado as my tier 1 locked in so that’s not changing. Tier 2 I have to choose between Daniel Murphy, Yelich and Posey. It’s a points league, based loosely on the linear run estimator weights, and Murphy and Yelich are drastically ahead of Posey, and I’m worried about Posey being a 30 year old catcher who has been knicked up this year. Is catcher so bad I should let go of one of those two or take my chances drafting another one next year.

Brad Johnson: So the thing with a lw points format is it’s really about positional replacement level

Brad Johnson: just making up some numbers here – let’s say Posey is 500 points, Murph/Yelich are 800 points. If C replacement is 250 and 2B/OF replacement is 700, then Posey is the more valuable keeper

Brad Johnson: so it’s up to you to figure that out.

Brad Johnson: Additionally, I’m not sure I’d bet on a second career season from Murphy. Regress his numbers a healthy amount towards career norms before making a decision

Brad Johnson: Honestly, I’m just seeing rumbles that he could be called up. My last deep dive on him was a month ago, I forget exactly what I concluded

Brad Johnson: I think there was something in the scouting report that made me doubt he’d transition well the MLB

Defectation: I’m in a 15 tm roto (redraft) and I need pitching. Is Jake Lamb too much to give up for Quintana? I’ve got Gurriel on the bench. Should I try to move for Salazar instead. Might be able to swap Kepler for him.

Brad Johnson: Lamb is a steep price when the back up could be terrible or barely play

Other Matt: Looking at keepers – is it nuts to think Didi is the better asset than Profar?

Brad Johnson: No, it’s not – at least in the near term

wayne: If chasing counting cats in H2H playoffs (HR, R, RBI, SB, W, K) how would you be splitting up 6 bench spots between SPs and (say) mon/thurs game hitters. Daily moves and 2x week waiver adds.

Brad Johnson: Assess the opponent first

Brad Johnson: obviously you want to target actually vulnerable stats

Brad Johnson: as an extreme example, if they had 6 Kershaw, you probably go after saves and all the hitting cats

Brad Johnson: there isn’t an ideal split in a vacuum, just depends on opponent, your roster, and who has 2 starts that week

Moltar: My league does a hybrid auction/snake, where the top 20 non-kept players are auctioned off and then everybody else gets drafted with a set salary. A pretty good compromise system.

Brad Johnson: That’s in reference to an earlier question about transitioning from snake to auction. There are a thousand ways to set up a hybrid. Requires a lot of manual commish work on most sites

Dungeon Master: Keeping Mazara for next year…What do you think of Mazara as a OF2 in mixed leagues going forward? Could we see .300 and 30 soon? Decent lineup and park so should have good counting R/RBI as well I’d hope.

Brad Johnson: The GB profile is a little bit like Yelich-lite.

Brad Johnson: Not sure we’ll see 30 HR

Brad Johnson: Otherwise, yea, I expect big things out of the middle of the lineup
