Here’s the transcript from my final chat of 2017. See you again next year!
4:01 |
Brad Johnson: Hey folks, let’s get down to business. First, I need to alert the twitters
4:02 |
Fat Steve: Who is cooler – you or Eno? Please show your work.
4:02 |
Brad Johnson: Well… Eno knows a LOT about beer
4:02 |
Brad Johnson: Which I think answers the question
4:02 |
A. Reitz: Curious your thoughts on Z. Godley’s last couple starts (SD & SFG). Both starts his pitches just looked flat, wearing down or something more? Do you see him as a Top 40 SP next year?
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: tbh, I didn’t watch these last couple starts so I can’t comment on that
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: It’s quite possible he’s tiring out since those should have been two of his easiest outings
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: He’s an easy top 40 SP
4:03 |
Fat Steve: How much emphasis do you put on having elite players, especially in a relatively shallow league (12 teams, shallow rosters)? Is a stars and scrubs approach more beneficial since the scrubs should be relatively decent?
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: It tends to be a year-to-year thing
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: This year, it was much better to patch with Yonder Alonsos than pay for a balanced team
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: That’s often true in a 12 team format, especially without MI/CI/5OF
4:04 |
Fat Steve: Is there any separation between Kershaw, Scherzer, Sale and Kluber for next year? Or should SP be viewed as that group and then everyone else?
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: I’m still giving a big edge to Kershaw.
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: Others may disagree. I may even change my mind in the next 4 months
4:04 |
Keith Hernandez: You like Brandon Woodruff as a streaming option tomorrow?
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: Yep, he’s on my list of about 10 or 12 guys who look streamable
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: he’s somewhere near the top of said list
4:05 |
AD: Championship week and my opponent and I both have 1 transaction remaining. With a similar number of projected starts, do I use it now to get a 2 start week (Mengden or Bridwell) or wait to see if I need help in a particular place later in the week?
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: I think you wait because those second starts may turn into bullpen games anyway
4:05 |
J.D. Martin: Which surprisingly productive catcher has a better chance of keeping it up next year, Chirinos or Flowers?
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: Chirinos isn’t doing anything unusual for him
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: He’s always been a decent fantasy guy – it’s just a matter of playing time
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: so I think he’s the better bet of the two
4:06 |
Adam: Looking at waiver wire SPs in my NL-Only league for the final series, chasing Ws to gain points, and at least not lose ground in ratios (3.96/1.26) and Ks (I’m +17). Can fill 3 spots. Suter (Cin) and Stratton (SD) look like the best available, and from there, I’m choosing from Corbin (@KC), Perdomo (@SF), AJCole (Pit), Lively (NYM), Pivetta (NYM), Romano (@Mil), Gohara (@Mia), and Brault/Nova (both @Wsh). Which, if any, do you trust for a good shot at a win with roughly 4.00/1.25 ratios or better? (plan B is load up on the best available low-ratio, high K/9 RPs).
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: I think Corbin is the guy I’d go with
4:07 |
A. Reitz: V. Robles sure does look exciting. Think he has a chance to make the opening day roster in 18, or likely goes down for more seasoning? Dexter Fowler a decent comp for him?
4:07 |
Brad Johnson: I do think there’s a decent chance he’s an Opening Day starter
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: The Nats probably prefer Taylor in a 4th/5th OFer role which seems sensible
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: Werth is probably getting to the point where he’s best as a half time player too
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: It’ll come down to Spring Training performance and any injuries that crop up though
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: Remember, they’ll get Adam Eaton back
4:08 |
A. Reitz: Y. Darvish has been lights out his last 3 starts…good time to get hot. Still view him as a Top 10ish SP, or more of a Top 20?
4:09 |
Brad Johnson: I think he’s inside the top 10. Let’s see where he lands. It shouldn’t have too much effect on his value, but the NL West would be better than the AL East (for example)
4:09 |
Moltar: In a heavyweight fight in the second week of my league’s h2h points championship. All I know is that win or lose, I’m gonna be real sad when fantasy baseball goes back in to hibernation for the winter
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: Indeed. Luckily, half my leagues are very active in the offseason. That’ll keep me going. You should get some good, active dynasties to feed your addiction
4:10 |
B: I need to make a choice between Carlos Martinez vs CHC or Josh Tomlin vs MIN tonight. Who would you start?
4:10 |
Moltar: What round do you see Gary Sanchez drafted in? Clear number 1 fantasy catcher?
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, he’s definitely #1. Sorry Buster.
4:11 |
Brad Johnson: Probably see him overdrafted in the 2nd round. Somewhere around picks 20 to 25
4:11 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not good at setting ADPs in September as my own strategies/tactics tend to diverge from industry norms
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: I’d never pay that early a pick for a catcher
4:12 |
B: There’s no way Chris Sale makes his scheduled start on Sunday against Houston right?
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: Well, there are starts and there are starts
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: I’d bet on a little 40 pitch tune up outing
4:12 |
A. Reitz: If you’re KCR…why not play J. Soler and R. Mondesi Jr. down the stretch to see what they’ve got? Neither one has made much of an appearance since rosters expanded and they were called up.
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: They probably didn’t want to hit the eject button until they were drawing dead. I think we’ll see more of them this week.
4:13 |
Slamboni: Need to start 2 of these this week: Lamet @ LAD, Straily vs ATL, Manaea @ TEX, Wacha vs CHC, which two should I go with?
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: I’d definitely do Straily
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: Lamet if you need Ks. Maybe Wacha for the Ws
4:13 |
Equifax: Think Brad Hand and Mike Minor are more 8th inning guys or have a decent shot at grabbing Saves in 2018?
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: If Hand stays in SD, he’ll close
4:14 |
Brad Johnson: Minor may have a tougher path to saves
4:14 |
Brad Johnson: decent speculative guy if you don’t have to decide on a keep until much later in the offseason
4:14 |
Larry Biggersby: One start left. Is it: Tomlin vs. CWS, Stroman @ NYY, Morton @ BOS? Don’t need K’s but like W’s (and ratios, naturally). Thanks!
4:14 |
Brad Johnson: I’d lean Stroman or Morton.
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t have strong feelings about those options, they’re all solid mid-tier plays
4:15 |
Bend it like Beckham: How long can we keep waiting for Chris Archers “breakout”?
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: He had a fine season
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t see any need for a breakout – 11.16 K/9, 4.18 ERA, and 1.27 WHIP are all positives this year
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: Blame the Rays for his win total
4:16 |
Marlin Man: Is this the real M. Ozuna (still only 26) or is this likely the best case scenario season for him?
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: I think this is going to be considered his best season from a raw output perspective
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: I’d love to see him traded somewhere with a complete roster
4:16 |
B: Is Andrelton Simmons a top 10 SS next season?
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, and we’re all going to be very nervous about it
4:17 |
Adam: Thoughts on Lucas Sims after what seemed like a pretty good outing against NYM’s half-lineup of starters in game 1 of yesterday’s DH? Trustable at Miami on Saturday, with the possibility Marlins will rest regulars?
4:17 |
Brad Johnson: Uh, I’d steer clear of Sims despite handling a Triple-A roster
4:17 |
Harrison: Is lamet actually a good pitcher?
4:17 |
Brad Johnson: I, uh, well…
4:17 |
Brad Johnson: Honestly, I’m still convinced he’s a very good reliever
4:17 |
Brad Johnson: The command just isn’t there
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: And the repertoire isn’t such that it makes sense to hope the command perks up a grade
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: As a starter, he’s probably Brad Peacock-ish. Max effort 5 innings, 10 K guy
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: Ugly ratios
4:19 |
Sandy Ravage: In your opinion, should there be a trade deadline in a dynasty where everyone is involved? Yeah it’s fun, but in a league that continues year over year, collusion is pretty clear when you see it? Plus if someone wants to give up a premium prospect for one week of a meh player with a great match up, LET HIM!
4:19 |
Brad Johnson: I go back and forth on this
4:19 |
Brad Johnson: There’s something to be said about focusing on managing your roster down the stretch rather than spending endless hours spoiling your rivals’ attempts to complete trades
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: As somebody with too many all-year leagues, I appreciate the time saved.
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: I also like crazy value gaps that can happen when 5 steals are the difference between 2nd and 6th place.
4:21 |
Larry Biggersby: Last chat! Thanks for all the help this year!
4:21 |
baseball guy: Hey Brad, thanks for the chat. H2H pts league — i know you arent in the mode of “trusting” anyone, but who do you feel better about in order with Brandon Woodruff, Matt Moore, and Jordan Montgomery (will he get 2 starts this week?)
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: If Monty gets 2 starts, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re both under 5 IP
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: And Moore is a random number generator this year. No rhyme or reason to his performances
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: Woodruff, I can get behind if you need the innings
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: And I’m not opposed to Monty either, just worried he won’t be able to supply wins
4:22 |
G. Stanton: Did you happen to see Bob Nightengale tweeted the San Fran Giants as the “hypothetical” front runners to land G. Stanton? I just…don’t see anything the Giants could offer, ML Roster or Minors to even get in the conversation. Better question, why did B. Nightengale straight up, make this story up?
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: This chatter has been going around for a week or 10 days (or so)
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: I agree that the Giants have squat to offer
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: But a package of Christian Arroyo, Tyler Beede, and some stuff might be “shiny” enough to sell to the fans. Only if the Giants take on the entire contract though
4:23 |
99: Is Kershaw worth keeping at a high salary next year? (ottoneu FG pts)
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: Hopefully my leaguemates won’t notice this. Definitely yes.
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: I’d need like a $12 Aaron Judge to trade him too
4:24 |
Joe B: Do you see Charlie Morton being a top 40 starting pitcher next year.
4:25 |
Brad Johnson: I think he’ll perform as such, barring injury. It’ll be interesting to see where he settles in ADP
4:25 |
twtcommish: Stashed Harper on the DL. Even getting 2-3 ABs…start him over someone like Marwin Gonzalez or Buxton?
4:25 |
Brad Johnson: Go Harper over Marwin
4:25 |
EccentricChemist: So what happens with Carson Kelly and Yadier Molina, it is easy to see that Kelly plays another half season at AAA and then backs up Molina for the other half with more of a time split than seen this season…but then 2019 and beyond?
4:26 |
Brad Johnson: Molina is getting old. He’ll slowly shift towards part time work. As the Braves showed us this year, you can get the most out of your catchers by splitting their playing time
4:26 |
Chet: Do you see Brad Peacock as a guy that could can be had a little late in the draft next year but finish as a top 30 guy? He’s up to 20 starts this year, but could make upwards of 25-30 next season, and he’s been lights out lately.
4:26 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think he’ll be sleepy, no
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: In snakes, the price will still be quite reasonable
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: snakes kind of force that for all but a few outlier types
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: in auctions, his price will depend upon when he’s nominated
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: If you pop him early, it’ll soar above $12
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: But if he’s late, you might see him fall for $3
4:28 |
Catchers: Sanchez, Judge, who goes first in draft?
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: Hit 50 HR and his only slump coincided with a shoulder injury
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: There’s nothing about his power that reads as fluky
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: He’s not like Bellinger or Hoskins where a switch back to the old ball could seriously impact his HR total
4:29 |
Taters: I understand Jackie Bradley Jr. is streaky, but he’s really only had a couple good months as a professional baseball player (defense aside). Is this what JBJ is or, do you think he can still be a Top 30 OF?
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: This seems to be what he is
4:30 |
Brad Johnson: Breakouts are always possible. Although I think a breakout looks more like Dexter Fowler than a true stud.
4:30 |
Catchers: Who would you take in 10-team Roto keeper- Luke Weaver for $2, Berrios for $3, or Tanaka for $5?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: I’d probably take the established piece with Tanaka
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Weaver is tempting, but I expect regression
4:31 |
Judge or Altuve: Who’s your AL MVP?
4:31 |
Sale vs. Kluber: Who’s your AL CY Young?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: As a fantasy analyst, this is not something I spend much time thinking about
4:32 |
Brad Johnson: Mike Trout and Chris Sale are my picks
4:32 |
Brad Johnson: The Cy race is much closer in my opinion
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: Since 2002, only one player had a better offensive season than Trout’s 181 wRC+
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: That’s Miggy in 2013
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: He’s 12 percentage points better than Judge and 19 better than Altuve
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: And his overall offensive value is a run below Altuve and 3.4 below Judge
4:35 |
Catchers: What’s Dejong outlook for next season?
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: Ah, the Cardinals will merit an entire series of articles, the result of which will be a shrug emoji
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: St. Louis has impressive depth, and they will play whoever is playing best
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: DeJong seemingly has the first look at shortstop. He held his own defensively too
4:36 |
The Man With No Name: Alex Wood’s velocity continues to trend down. Worried about that vs. SDP tonight? Any long-run concern?
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: A little worried about both
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: Definitely seems worn down
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: I think we see fewer, fresher starts from him next year
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: The Dodgers will continue their DL antics
4:37 |
Chet: Where do you think JD Martinez ends up signing? This may be crazy, but I think he would make a lot of sense back in Houston as a DH.
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: That makes a lot of sense to me too
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: The Rangers also seem like a fit
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: If the DBacks make any kind of run, don’t discount them
4:38 |
Brad Johnson: Their owner might get involved like with Greinke
4:38 |
Chet: Are we seeing the last of Carlos Gonzalez in MLB? I really just don’t see a team signing him to play next year.
4:38 |
Brad Johnson: Why? He’s played pretty well down the stretch. I bet he signs a cheap deal to stay in Colorado
4:38 |
Adam: The Phils have also been mentioned as a Stanton (and Yelich) destination – they can take the contract for sure (basically no big $$ on the books for 2018 forward), but what kind of package would get it done for one or both?
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll start by saying that suggesting a package for Stanton is a waste of effort
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: There’s no precedent for trading that type of contract
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: it’s a risk stew topped with a creamy risk sauce
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: and it’s weird to put sauce on stew
4:40 |
Brad Johnson: The Phillies could definitely afford the prospect and financial cost
4:40 |
Brad Johnson: Would the Marlins trade him in-division? I doubt it.
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Say he has 3 elite years left – I don’t think Jeter and company want to remind the fans that often
4:41 |
Matt: What do you make of Mike Zunino for next year (particularly in OBP leagues where he’s not half-bad on that front)? Do you think we’re finally seeing his long-awaited breakout? Could he be a top 5 catcher in 2018?
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: I haven’t seen anything different from past seasons.
4:42 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think he’ll repeat a .354 BABIP. He really doesn’t have a high BABIP profile
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: I figure he’s probably a .220/.315/.460 hitter. 20-25 HR, bottom of the order run production
4:43 |
Stav: Start 2. K Davis, Reyes, Corey Seager, Redon. Down two homers and two net stolen bases in my two week championship match.
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: Do you need both categories? Or can you just chase one of those points.
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: If you need both, I think you have to gamble on Reyes and Rendon
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: If one is good enough, definitely go for Davis and your choice of complement
4:44 |
Jeb: I hate predicting careers but, it feels like Judge is about to go on a 10 year run we’ve never seen in the sport (excluding steroid era) in terms of pure power output. Am I imagining this?
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: Try that link
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think Judge will be quite as blind as Ryan Howard, but I wouldn’t bet on 25 year old rookies to break baseball
4:46 |
AD: Is it suicide to start Urena at Coors tonight?
4:46 |
A. Reitz: I can’t help but look at G. Bird’s minor league numbers, splits and approach w/ that launch angle and that home park and think he’s destined for stardom or at the very least, perennial all star. Your thoughts? Health, seems to be the only thing standing in his way.
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: That and hitting the baseball. MLB pitchers eat him alive. He has some adjustments to make
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: If he becomes a perennial All Star, his jersey will have more to do with it than his talent relative to other 1B
4:47 |
Mike: Do the reds bring up Senzel early next year.
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: Possibly. I don’t see any reason for them to rush. Suarez is an extension candidate, and he’s unlikely to slide back to SS or 2B
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: 2B is at least possible though
4:48 |
Sonny: What do I do with Jose Martinez? In the finals and could keep him cheap but with Olson, Moncada and others going down I need bats
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: Martinez will be a headache for owners in deep keeper leagues
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: really need the Cardinals to set him free
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: another article in that series
4:48 |
A. Reitz: As a Cardinals fan, I can’t help but think S. Piscotty’s personal situation (Mother was diagnosed w/ ALS early in the season) contributed to a lot of his struggles. Still think he’s a Top 40 OF or did his rookie season cloud my judgement a bit.
4:49 |
Brad Johnson: With Piscotty not joining the power parade this year, my outlook is definitely down. I do think he’ll return to his previous production, it’s just that it’s no longer top 40 quality
4:49 |
The Man With No Name: Gyorko or DeJong in Ottoneu 4×4 for 2018?
4:49 |
The Man With No Name: Is Contreras a top 5 catcher next year?
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll eat hat on this one, I liked Alex Avila more than Contreras around mid-season
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: Pretty sure Contreras will be catcher #3
4:50 |
Flojo: 20 Team Dynasty, M. Franco or R. Healy?
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: Ooh, that’s a fun bet
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: I’d go after Franco’s ceiling, but he could run out of a job very soon
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: I still think he’s Edwin Encarnacion
4:51 |
Man: Is Francis Martes still a good starter long term?
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: Teams have become less and less patient about developing starters. He might find himself stuck in the bullpen if the command doesn’t improve quickly
4:52 |
A. Reitz: Thoughts on I. Happ in 2018 and beyond? Moved quick through the Cubs system w/ really nice splits. + pop at 2B w/ OF eligibility. Feels kind of like Kipnis to me before he took off. Your thoughts?
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: I’m a huge fan of Happ as an affordable breakout candidate
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: feels like there could be some dissatisfied owners to prey upon
4:52 |
Playing for the Trophy: Need ERA, W, K – Rank these SPs: Lively @ PHI, Lugo @PHI, Sabathia TOR, Boyd @ MIN, Anibal Sanchez @KC, @MIN Bridwell SEA, @CHW.
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: Oh god… Bridwell and Sabathia are startable
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: Maybe Lively will help his cause enough for a win. He’s almost more valuable as a hitter
4:53 |
Pablo: Is Tom Murphy ever going to be the primary catcher in Colorado? I’ve been holding for a couple years in a Dynasty hoping to at least get something like one of Wilin Rosario’s good years.
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: He’ll compete for the job next spring. I’ve been out for a couple years now. Doesn’t make enough contact
4:54 |
Lost: Brad, I lost my fantasy H2H Championship. Where do I go from here?
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: I understand spirits can help with loss
4:55 |
Flojo: Is Daniel Mengden interesting in deeper formats?
4:55 |
Fat Steve: I’m a H2H 6×6, would you punt something like SB or SV? Or still go for it all? Seems more reasonable to punt in H2H than roto.
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: I try to start each week alive in all categories and adjust as I go
4:55 |
John: What might one expect from Logan Morrison next season? He has cooled off mightily in the second half, but has still provided solid value in Ottoneu this year.
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: It’s going to be very hard to put any value on LoMo, Alonso, and similar breakouts
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: There were so many that some have to be written off as flukes
4:56 |
The Man With No Name: Is Walker Buehler going to be a fantasy stud?
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: He looks like a monster to me
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: Let Julio Urias serve as a cautionary tale
4:57 |
A. Reitz: I know Eno liked him alot coming in to the year, I own some shares in deeper formats but, if Brock Stewart gets a shot somewhere next year is he worth rostering or meh?
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: I still like the profile
4:57 |
Orange WHIPs: Just lost Olson. Desperately need power/RBIs and only have one move left. Anybody out there you love? Teosco is available.
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: Well that’s tricky. The best widely available guy is probably Aaron Altherr – sounds like he’s not on your wire
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: Hunter Renfroe could have some september magic left in the tank
4:58 |
Keith Hernandez: You think Glasnow provides any fantasy value next year? Dude absolutely dominates AAA hitting and can’t get major league hitters out for his life.
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: I think if the Pirates want him to develop, they have to suffer through his growing pains in the majors. He probably should be used as a reliever like Carlos Carrasco
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: I watched him pitch against the Bulls earlier this year
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: no command or control
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: but the stuff was so good that they all went up there swinging
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: like they closed their eyes and swung hard at everything
5:00 |
A. Reitz: So…E. Hosmer is good right? Or are we still saying he’s not?
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: I mean, if you put him in the middle of a decent lineup, he’ll give you some fantasy-able stats
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: He’s pretty mediocre as a player
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t know why anybody would pay for him over say Alonso or LoMo
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: both of whom will cost next to nothing
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: And I’d prefer Carlos Santana
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: that’s all from a real baseball perspective
5:02 |
Mega: Brad Miller had a monster season in 2016, 2017…not so much. Is he rosterable in deeper formats or was 2016 seriously a fluke?
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: In deep leagues, it doesn’t hurt to pay nothing and hope for a dead cat bounce
5:02 |
MegaMan: Better career…Jose Ramirez or Francisco Lindor?
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: But they’ll both be studs
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: Ramirez reminds me of a more powerful Placido Polanco
5:03 |
MegaMan: Top 50 SP who could surprise us all and become a Top 20 SP in 2018…?
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: Bundy, Marquez, Montgomery, Walker, ERod, Clevinger
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: Jordan, not Mike Montgomery
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: I’ve cooled slightly on Mike
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: Still like him, but not as an emerging stud
5:05 |
El Duderudo: Thanks for doing these chats. In particular, your advice last week was great (Albies over Kendrick, dropping McCullers and Paxson) and seems to have saved my roto season.
5:06 |
Brad Johnson: Glad they worked out!
5:06 |
Jazzflute: You were right about Glasnow btw. He’s brutal.
5:06 |
Brad Johnson: Makes up for being wrong about Pham and Avila? Maybe
5:06 |
Isthison?: Does M. Stroman have a next level? His lack of K’s makes me feel like he’s a great sell high candidate in dynasties. Any loss of velo or stuff and he could be a back end SP.
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: He’s an extreme work ethic guy, and he’s exceptionally crafty too
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: I think there’s another level in there unrelated to his actual stuff
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: More to the point, I expect him to be pretty steady year to year
5:08 |
Brad Johnson: one of those guys you remember making a bunch of bad starts, then notice the overall production helped carry your roster
5:08 |
Jazzflute: Your thoughts on Dinelson Lamet and Luiz Gohara long term in a QS league?
5:08 |
Jazzflute: I just saw the Lamet verdict. How about Gohara long term (QS league)?
5:08 |
Brad Johnson: I haven’t watch Gohara yet – I lose some zeal late in the year
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: Statistically, I like the early results, but I do worry about pitchers with low ground ball rates
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: They can take longer to settle in to the majors
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: That said, there are more hitters than ever sitting on low pitches. If he’s using his heat at the letters, he’ll get a lot of free Ks
5:10 |
Elore: Deep Dynasty, need an OF’er. 3 years of league min. control of Godley, for 1 year of Ozuna (I’d have to extend him)
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: You’ve supplied just enough info for me to know that I really can’t advise you
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: Every dynasty is unique. There are leagues where that’ll work and leagues where it’s a poor move
5:11 |
A. Reitz: Jose Berrios wore down but, feels like he has Top 20 stuff. Had a chance to watch him much?
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, I like him, but he’s so hyped
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: He’s guaranteed to cost more than my projection
5:12 |
Orange WHIPs: Btw, thanks for the advice to start Clayton Richard. It came up huge.
5:12 |
Dougie Jones: Looking for elite relievers to cement my ERA for the last few days of the season…who do you like best between Chad Green, Archie Bradley, Brad Brach? Saves don’t matter and obviously they need to make appearances to be relevant. Thanks!
5:12 |
Brad Johnson: You could flip a coin for those guys. Brach may be more likely to make multiple appearances. Green and Bradley more likely to pitch once for multiple innings
5:13 |
MegaMan: Something I can’t help but notice, when I watch someone like Corey Kluber. It’s not just that he has a great variety of pitches, it’s HOW his pitches move. Am I imagining his 2 seamer as the best/coolest pitch in baseball?
5:13 |
Brad Johnson: He does have really crazy movement on that pitch in particular
5:14 |
Don: Greg Bird looks like a Bellinger Lite. Think if he can stay healthy next year he could put up a .260 35 HR plus season?
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: It’s possible
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: I think he needs more than health to get there
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: There are adjustments to be made, and it’s not certain he can make them
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: Remember, Bird was a guy scouts thought might not hit in the majors
5:15 |
MegaMan: RE: Corey Kluber…why can’t more people throw that pitch?
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: Because a baseball shouldn’t do that…
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: There are actually plenty of pitchers who can get that movement. The issue is consistency and command
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: Gerrit Cole does it sometimes
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: but you can tell it’s a surprise when it happens
5:15 |
Brad: If Jake Bauers adds more power he’s the next Hoskins?!
5:16 |
Brad Johnson: I saw about 50 PA of Bauers this year. I’d bet against him being a major league hitter
5:16 |
Brad Johnson: Time to wrap it up folks. I answered nearly everything today! See ya all next season.
5:17 |
Orange WHIPs: Will Zach Davies be making his Sunday start regardless? Or do I need to plan on finding a replacement?
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: Honestly, no idea
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: I have no inside info on Brewers
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: or most teams for that matter
5:17 |
Quivu: Bauers had a great spring…Including several towering HR’s. Just spring but, combined w/ his plate discipline he feels like the “type” that could break out, eventually.
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: I wasn’t impressed with his power
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: thought the swing seems slow
5:17 |
Orange WHIPs: What kinds of RPs get shut down last week? Ones on good or bad teams? Or is usage just normal the last week?
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: It’s extremely individual
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Mostly the guys who have been pitching through minor injury
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: we’re not privy to that info
5:18 |
weezy: My keepers looked great until Jimmy Nelson and Conforto both exploded their shoulders. Does either get replaced with a Matt Olson or Luis Castillo? Same prices.
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, keep ’em both
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Less confident about Olson, but I imagine it’s a very low price
5:19 |
Brad Johnson: Good game folks
